F.A.Q.

Questions About German Citizenship?

Answers Are Here

Read the information below or contact us if anything remains unclear.

How long does the citizenship application process take?

The overall process typically takes between 6 months and 2 years, depending on several key factors:

  • The workload of the local immigration authority
  • The complexity of your case
  • The completeness and quality of the submitted documents (a well-prepared application significantly speeds up the review process, while missing documents may cause delays)

Our goal is to accelerate the process through precise document preparation and professional communication with the authorities, helping to minimize potential delays.

What documents are required?

The standard package usually includes:

  1. Valid identification documents
  2. Proof of income
  3. Proof of integration (B1 German language certificate and the “Leben in Deutschland” test certificate)
  4. Proof of residence (registration certificate – Anmeldebestätigung, rental agreement)
  5. Certificate of no criminal record

Important: The exact list of documents may vary depending on your individual circumstances. We conduct a case assessment and prepare a personalized document package.

What requirements must the applicant meet?

Key legal requirements include:

  1. Legal residence in Germany for at least 8 years (this may be reduced to 6–7 years with strong integration; for spouses of German citizens – down to 3 years)
  2. Sufficient income without receiving Bürgergeld or Sozialhilfe
  3. Verified German language proficiency at level B1 or higher
  4. Commitment to the free democratic constitutional order of Germany and no serious criminal record
  5. Renunciation of previous citizenship (exceptions apply under current legislation)

We help our clients prepare the necessary evidence to meet each requirement successfully.

How does the agency assist with the interview?

We provide comprehensive preparation to ensure a smooth interview process:

  1. We explain possible questions (about your background, motivation, and understanding of German values) and how to respond appropriately
  2. We guide you on how to navigate your documents during the interview
  3. We review the procedure and simulate challenging questions

Our goal is for you to feel confident and well-prepared.

Is it possible to apply for citizenship through investment or entrepreneurship?

Germany does not have a direct “citizenship by investment” program. However, entrepreneurial activity can serve as a basis for obtaining a residence permit and, eventually, citizenship — provided all legal requirements are met.

Obtaining German Citizenship

Obtaining German citizenship remains one of the most desired goals for those who have been living and working in Germany for many years. Since June 2024, the new Citizenship Modernization Act has come into force, significantly simplifying and accelerating the procedure. Now a German passport can be obtained after 5 years of legal residence instead of the previous 8, and with special integration — in as little as 3 years.
German citizenship provides not only visa-free travel to more than 190 countries worldwide, but also voting rights, the opportunity to work in public service, full protection from deportation, and automatic transfer of status to children at birth.

Main Ways to Obtain German Citizenship

The most common way to obtain German citizenship is through naturalization (Einbürgerung). Under the new 2024–2025 rules, applicants can apply after 5 years of legal residence in Germany with a temporary or permanent residence permit.

To obtain German citizenship by naturalization, applicants must pass the German citizenship exam (Einbürgerungstest), demonstrate German language skills at level B1, confirm financial independence, and show commitment to the democratic constitutional order.

Certain categories qualify for simplified German citizenship. Spouses of German citizens may apply after 3 years of marriage and 3 years of legal residence. Children born in Germany may automatically qualify if at least one parent has held permanent residence for 5 years. Individuals with special integration achievements (scientists, athletes, volunteers) may apply after 3 years. Victims of the Nazi regime and their descendants may obtain German citizenship without a residence requirement.

German Citizenship by Descent and Restoration of Citizenship

German citizenship by descent (Abstammung) is automatically granted if at least one parent was a German citizen at the time of the child’s birth.

Since 2024, restoration of German citizenship has become significantly easier for descendants of individuals who lost citizenship between 1933 and 1945 due to Nazi laws. Applicants must prove lineage and submit a declaration to the competent authority.

Citizenship by descent Germany remains one of the fastest legal pathways where eligibility exists.

German Citizenship by Marriage

German citizenship by marriage allows spouses of German nationals to apply under simplified conditions after 3 years of marriage and 3 years of lawful residence in Germany.

Applicants must confirm German language level B1 and usually pass the citizenship test. Stable family life and integration are positively considered during the citizenship review process.

Dual Citizenship in Germany (Since 2024 Reform)

Since June 2024, dual citizenship in Germany has been officially permitted for all naturalization applicants regardless of country of origin.

The requirement to renounce previous citizenship has been abolished. German authorities now automatically allow dual citizenship Germany, including possession of a second or even third nationality.

The only exception applies where the country of origin legally prohibits renunciation. In such cases, proof from the foreign embassy is sufficient, and German citizenship is granted without renunciation.

German Citizenship for Ukrainians

German citizenship for Ukrainians has become more accessible due to temporary protection status under §24 AufenthG. Time spent under Paragraph 24 counts fully toward the required 5-year residence period.

With permanent residence and German language level B1, many Ukrainian nationals may apply for German citizenship in 2025–2026.

Switching from temporary protection to a long-term residence permit can further strengthen eligibility for naturalization.

German Citizenship Requirements 2025

The main German citizenship requirements include legal residence in Germany for 5 years (or 3 years in cases of special integration), German language level of at least B1, successful completion of the German citizenship exam (minimum 17 correct answers out of 33), and financial independence.

Applicants must have no serious criminal record and must demonstrate loyalty to the democratic constitutional order of Germany.

Since the 2024 reform, renunciation of previous citizenship is generally no longer required.

Documents Required for German Citizenship

Documents required for German citizenship typically include a valid international passport, birth certificate with apostille and certified translation, current residence permit or permanent residence card, B1 language certificate, and Einbürgerungstest result.

Applicants must also submit proof of income for the last three years, housing documents, police clearance certificates from countries of residence after age 14, and a tabular CV (Lebenslauf).

Processing time for German citizenship varies between 10 and 24 months depending on the federal state and workload of the Einbürgerungsamt.

Rights of a German Citizen

After taking the oath, a German citizen receives one of the strongest passports in the European Union, with visa-free access to most countries worldwide.

German citizenship grants the right to vote and be elected, access to all public-sector positions including police and military service, full protection from expulsion, automatic citizenship for children, and the right to live and work in any EU member state.

Obtaining German citizenship provides lifelong security, political rights, and unrestricted freedom within the European Union.
