WHY IT’S EASIER WITH US
What Is a Family
Reunification Visa?
A family reunification visa is a national visa that
allows a person to move to Germany to join a
close family member who is already legally residing
in the country.
Most commonly, this applies to joining a spouse, a child, or a parent of a minor child.
This visa is intended for those who want not only to visit Germany, but to live
together with their family there. After entering Germany on this visa, the applicant
usually applies for a residence permit within the country.

German language requirement |
A basic level of German (A1) is often required for spouses; exceptions may apply |

We help you understand the key points:
whether you are currently eligible to apply, what may be missing in your case, and how to prepare your documents so that
the authorities have fewer questions during the review process.

If one of the spouses already holds a residence permit, permanent residence permit, or German citizenship.
If one of the parents is legally residing in Germany and is eligible for family reunification, the child may relocate to Germany to live with that parent.
If your child is residing in Germany (for example, with refugee status or a residence permit), you may be eligible to relocate to Germany in order to exercise parental rights and live together as a family.
You communicate with our team in Russian, Ukrainian, or English, while we handle communication with the German authorities in German.
If your situation is more complex — for example, your marriage was concluded outside Germany, there is a child from a previous relationship, the sponsoring family member has a complicated immigration status, or there is urgency involved — such cases are especially important to review before submitting an application rather than after receiving a refusal.
REQUIREMENTS
Requirements for Obtaining a Residence Permit Through Family Reunification
The exact requirements depend on whom you are joining in Germany and on the immigration status of your family member. However, in most cases, the following conditions are reviewed.
You must have a genuine family relationship with a person in Germany: a spouse, a minor child, or a parent of a minor child.
You must provide documentary evidence of the family relationship, such as a marriage certificate, birth certificates, and, where necessary, other supporting documents.
Your family member in Germany must either be a German citizen or hold a valid residence permit (Aufenthaltstitel), residence permit, or permanent residence permit that allows family reunification.
For certain categories of applications, it may be necessary to demonstrate that the sponsoring family member has stable income and/or suitable accommodation for living together.
In many cases, spouses applying for family reunification are expected to demonstrate German language skills at A1 level, unless an exception applies to their specific situation.

Still Have Questions?
We Already Have the Answers
We’ve collected the most common questions about visas, residence permits, and our services —
so you can get the information you need right away, without endless emails or waiting.
They are key but separate stages of the immigration process.
- A visa is permission to enter Germany and stay for a short period (usually up to 3–6 months). It is applied for at the German embassy or consulate in your country of residence. The purpose of a visa may include study, employment, family reunification, etc.
- A residence permit is authorization for long-term stay (one year or longer), which you obtain after arriving in Germany from the local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde). A valid reason is required, such as employment, family reunification, study, or business activity.
In short: a visa allows you to enter Germany, while a residence permit allows you to live there legally long term. In many cases, you first enter Germany with a national visa (for example, for work or family reunification) and then apply for a residence permit.
A refusal is неприятная, but not a fatal situation. The key is to act strategically.
- Carefully review the refusal letter to understand the reason and use it as the basis for your next steps.
- File an appeal (remonstration). You usually have about one month to challenge the decision.
- Address the reason for the refusal. This may involve insufficient financial proof or an incomplete set of documents. We help analyze the refusal, prepare the necessary supporting documents, and draft a strong appeal letter.
Our recommendation: Do not act blindly. A well-prepared response to a refusal significantly increases your chances of success when reapplying.
Yes, in many cases it is possible. Language requirements depend entirely on the purpose of your relocation. For work visas, English is often sufficient, and for the EU Blue Card, language requirements are generally more flexible. For family reunification, only a basic level of German is usually required. In cases of study or job seeking, English may also be acceptable. We will help you determine which program is best suited to your situation and clearly explain the exact language requirements that apply to your specific case.
- A visa itself cannot be extended in Germany. It must be converted into a residence permit at the local immigration office (Ausländerbehörde) before the visa expires.
- A residence permit can be extended in Germany. The extension is processed by the same immigration office (Ausländerbehörde). It is important to apply in advance (we recommend 2–3 months before expiration).
To extend a residence permit, you must confirm that you continue to meet the required conditions (employment, sufficient financial means, valid purpose of stay). Important: We support our clients throughout the residence permit extension process — helping prepare the required documents and ensuring a smooth application.
