Why It Is Easier with Us
What Is a
Family Reunification Visa
A family reunification visa is a national
visa that allows you to move to Germany to join a close
relative who already lives there
legally.
In most cases, this means moving to join a spouse or child, or relocating
a minor child to live with a parent.
This visa is intended for people who want not merely to visit, but to live together with their
family in Germany. After entering on this visa, the applicant generally
applies for a residence permit in Germany.

If one partner already holds a residence permit, permanent residence, or German citizenship
If one parent is legally resident in Germany and is entitled to family reunification,
the child may relocate to live with that parent.
If your child lives in Germany—for example, because they have been granted asylum or hold a residence permit—
you, as the parents, may relocate to exercise your parental rights and live together with your child.
You communicate with our team in Russian, Ukrainian, or English, while we handle the German-language bureaucracy.
If your situation is unusual—for example, the marriage was concluded outside Germany, there is a child from a previous relationship, the inviting party has a complex status, or the relocation is urgent—it is especially important to review the case before applying, not after a refusal.

Eligibility Requirements
Requirements
for Obtaining
a Family Reunification Residence Permit
The exact list depends on whom
you are joining and the status your
relative holds in Germany. In most cases, however, the following conditions are reviewed.
You must have a genuine family relationship with the person in Germany: a spouse, a minor child
or the parent of a minor child.
The family relationship must be documented by providing a marriage certificate, birth certificates, and, where required, other supporting documents.
The family member in Germany must be a German citizen or hold a valid Aufenthaltstitel / residence permit / permanent residence status that permits family reunification.
For certain case categories, the inviting party must demonstrate that they have a stable income and/or suitable accommodation for the family to live together.
In many cases, a spouse relocating through family reunification is expected to have German language skills at level A1, unless an exception applies to the specific case.

These are two key but distinct stages of immigration.
- A visa is authorization to enter Germany and stay for a short period (usually up to 3–6 months). It is requested from the embassy/consulate in your country of residence. The purpose of the visa may be study, work, family reunification, etc.
- A residence permit authorizes long-term residence (one year or more) and is obtained after you are already in Germany, from the immigration authority (Ausländerbehörde). A valid reason is required, such as employment, family reunification, study, or business.
In short: a visa allows you to enter Germany, while a residence permit allows you to live there legally for an extended period. You will often enter on a national visa—for example, for work or family reunification—and then apply for a residence permit.
Yes, in many cases this is possible. The language requirement depends entirely on the purpose of your relocation. English is often sufficient for work visas, while language requirements for EU Blue Cards are simplified. Family reunification usually requires only a basic level, while English may be sufficient for study or job seeking. We will help determine which program is right for you and explain the exact language requirements for your situation
- A visa cannot be extended in Germany. It must be converted into a residence permit at the immigration authority before the visa expires.
- A residence permit can be extended in Germany. The extension is handled by the same authority (Ausländerbehörde). It is important to apply well in advance (2–3 months before expiry is recommended). To obtain an extension, you must demonstrate that the conditions continue to be met, including employment, sufficient funds, and an ongoing purpose of residence.
Important: We support the residence permit extension process by helping you collect an up-to-date set of documents and prepare for submission.
